Business School Accreditation: AACSB Online MBA Degrees

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

An MBA, short for a Master of Business Administration degree, is often desired by those who work in the business, management, finance, or human resource sectors.

An Online MBA degree program is nearly identical in every way to on-campus MBA programs and typically requires approximately two years to complete.

Most Distance Education Master of Business Administration degrees cover topics in a broad range of subjects such as management, global business strategies, strategic management, public policy, ethics, and finance.

AACSB Online MBA Degree Programs – What sets them apart?

AACSB International accreditation is the highest standard of achievement for business colleges in the world. AACSB accredited business schools must meet the expectations of a broad range of quality standards relating to curriculum, faculty resources, admissions, degree requirements, library and computer facilities, financial resources and intellectual climate.

AACSB business programs must meet or exceed these rigorous standards. Established in 1916, AACSB International’s founding members include many Ivy League schools such as Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Yale, and Harvard. Therefore, when a university attains AACSB International accreditation, it distinguishes the university as an internationally benchmarked business university ranking among the world’s best institutions.

AACSB Online MBA Programs vs. Campus-Based AACSB MBA Programs

By and large, distance education MBA programs vary only in the mode of instructional delivery. The degree awarded will be the same in every respect; your diploma makes no distinction in how the degree was earned, whether on-campus or online through a distance learning program. This can be easily verified by asking an admission’s counselor at the institution you are considering.

Instead of attending classes full-time during the day or part-time in the evenings, Distance Master of Business Administration students can complete the entire degree online. By attending classes online, students are able to maintain their personal and business commitments with litte disruption.

Those who opt to earn their AACSB Online MBA can be assured that the business program is held to the highest standards as these programs must maintain a high-level of quality not only in curriculum, but in library and computer facilities, faculty resources, degree requirements, and intellectual climate.

Online MBA Salary and Career Information

Those who earn an AACSB Online MBA program can expect to receive a salary approximately 25 to 50 percent higher than their peers that only hold a bachelor’s or associate’s degree. Online MBA Degree graduates may use their degree to climb the corporate ladder and position themselves for important roles in corporate business, such as CEOs, CFOs, Department Managers, and Resource Managers, among others.

The skills gained by undertaking an AACSB Online MBA program include strategic planning, critical thinking and decision making. These skills are paramount when utilized within a large firm or corporate setting.

AACSB Online MBA Universities

An online MBA program is one well worth considering, but there are very few universities offering AACSB-Accredited MBA programs online… but there is one noteworthy exception: Northeastern University.

Established in 1898, Northeastern University is located in Boston. Ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Northeastern University’s College of Business now offers eight accredited AACSB Online MBA programs including an MBA in General Management, MBA in Marketing, MBA in Finance, MBA in International Management, MBA in Technology Management, MBA in Healthcare Management, MBA in Entrepreneurship, and an MBA in Supply Chain Management.

What is an MBA degree?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

An MBA is a probably the most common masters degree that every person aspires to do nowadays. Although it is a masters in business administration, it places no restrictions whatsoever as to who might want to go for it. What it means is hat no matter what any background you come from, be it engineering, medicine, science, liberal arts; you are welcome to pursue this degree.

At some point in time of each and every individual’s careers, management becomes an almost inevitable part of day to day work and these skills will continue to be required as one climbs the corporate ladder. An MBA degree isn’t just an easier path to switch your career to financial industry or a rewarding consulting career but the option that one has when an MAB is acquired is truly numerous. A good number of people do an MBA to get a good skill set to start their own companies in whatever field they are interested in. A few of them during their MBA may cash in on wonderful ideas that sprout up in their head while taking some specific lessons in a particular field. They then invest much of their time of the MBA fine tuning their idea so that they would be able to kick start a venture once they graduate with an MBA. People with an MBA also continue to a technical field if that where they came from since a management degree with a technical degree is pretty much mandatory to run a technological venture since management only teaches so much as to manage people and process but without ground knowledge and realities, these lessons will be fruitless. Hence an M B A is not just a stepping stone to a financial freedom but a new way of looking at things around the chance to make a greater change for a lot more people working under you.

Why you’d want to pursue an MBA degree

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

There are two things in life that you do not miss until you need them. One is insurance and the other is education. Not too long ago a college degree was the minimum educational requirement for entry into corporate America. Today, however, to be considered for certain executive positions the bar has been raised to require an MBA, or MS for certain technical positions.

In addition, if you have an undergraduate degree in a technical engineering discipline to move up the ladder into management the MBA is the typical vehicle needed to add the business basics to your skill set.

These days, many university’s are offering the MBA as a timely extension of the undergraduate degree. Most have been promoting a 5 year program encompassing the undergraduate and graduate MBA as part of the new term for students interested in careers in business. In many ways it makes sense and certainly avoids the risk that many take by never going back to school for their masters degrees. On the other hand, to get the full appreciation of the value of the MBA it is better if you study for your MBA after you have had some work experience so that you can have a greater understanding and application of the MBA fundamentals to what you already have already done in your career. This is especially true for engineers.

The other real value of returning to get your MBA as a junior or middle manager is that you are introduced to a new collection of peers that usually becomes a critical part of your “network” for the future. Some universities actually require a certain amount of work experience as part of their criteria for being accepted to their MBA programs. In addition the exposure to the typical faculty members that teach in MBA programs represents another set of prospective mentors and networking opportunities. These faculty members are also usually involved in research and with organizations as consultants that could be another door opener for you.

Lastly, the courses in most MBA programs and the deliverables require a level of analysis, research and teamwork that can be an invaluable learning experience for you. The majority of MBA programs have a Capstone course that exercises all of the course material that you have learned in the typical MBA. And to really top it off there is also usually an Entrepreneurship elective where you can develop a business plan for an idea that you have probably had for a business for quite awhile, which is another great opportunity to apply what you have learned during your MBA experience.

Since you also move through most MBA programs as a team typically called a “cohort”, the value of the team aspect of management is reinforced by your MBA experience. There are many projects and team presentations, as well as team competitions associated with almost every MBA course. There is a substantial time commitment to getting your MBA that needs to be clearly explained to your family before embarking on the completion of this particular degree.

You also need to realize that once you have your MBA you need to do something with it other than have it framed and hung on the wall. Unfortunately, the achievement of getting your MBA does not automatically qualify you for an immediate promotion with your current employer. Often, you have to look elsewhere to capatilize on the value of your MBA degree.

Is it really worth getting an MBA?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Doing an MBA has many benefits and most consider it as an asset on the CV.

Most people look to do an MBA to make more money and get more career opportunities.

Yet before a person decides to do an MBA he/she must look at the benefits which he/she will derive from doing an MBA as there are many pros and cons of doing an MBA.

Once you have completed your MBA your ability to earn more money increases. After doing a full-time MBA most people improve their market worthiness which results in an increase in the earning potential, which is better than what it would have been before doing the MBA. (After all most people work for money.)

Better Career Opportunities

An MBA helps a person get better career opportunities as many jobs have a Post Graduate degree as the minimum basic qualification. An MBA also can open more doors in terms of promotions.

Better Knowledge & Improved Perspective

MBA provides a person with a strong foundation of knowledge & concepts. It also improves the ability to understand any business scenario. This is an important factor in senior management positions in any large company.

Networking

An MBA provides an opportunity to network with other students and alumni. A good network can be really beneficial in many ways be it getting a job or clients or employees. It has many other benefits also. Most people do not use this channel effectively.

Improved Skills

An MBA provides an opportunity to improve public speaking skills, presentation skills, people skills, etc. These improvements get ingrained into a person’s personality and provide long-term benefits.

The dis-advantages are

Loss of Income

For a working professional doing a full-time MBA means loss of income. This is one of the biggest reasons many working professionals do not do an MBA.

Focus on Improvements rather than Creation

The focus in an MBA programme is typically to improve processes, but this can prevent a person from thinking about path breaking innovations. Rarely do path breaking innovations come from a person who has done an MBA in the recent past. This is something on which most MBA programmes are critized on and it’s something many institutes are working on.

Challenge of studying after a long period

It is a major challenge for many to get back to class after a long gap. People who have worked for over 5 years take quite some time to get used to being a student again.

Not everybody needs an MBA

If you have worked for over 10 years, the benefits you may derive from an MBA may be limited. 10 years of working provides first hand experience of most aspects of business, in such cases an MBA can add very little incremental value.

An MBA does not guarantee success

An MBA provides more opportunities to a person, yet how you take advantage of such opportunities depends on you. An MBA does not necessarily teach you how to take advantage of opportunities.

Part Time and Distance MBA lack full recognition

Most employers consider only a full-time MBA degree; a few consider part-time MBA degrees also. But it is a very small group that considers distance MBA as a valid qualification; unless it happens to be backed by a renowned B-School. So be careful when you choose the type of MBA to pursue.

There are many advantages and dis-advantages of an MBA, yet an MBA is not a pre-requisite for success; there are so many successful people who have not done an MBA. However, for most the advantages outnumber the dis-advantages.
